Healing Fire Island | Clearing Customs

It’s a beautiful day here and I was thinking about Rocks and Luke arriving on island, clearing customs and immigration and introducing themselves to their new colleagues. They were so excited! I walked on the beach thinking about having just sailed over after 10 days at sea, remembering just such a trip and how wonderful and relaxing the ocean can be. The sun can be such a friend. Fire Island was hiding many awesome adventures and a few secrets, but first Rocks needed to get busy getting the clinic up and running, they had been down for several weeks waiting for her to arrive. They got the yacht shipshape and she had her clinic tour. Jet got her land legs back. They found their favorite tiki bars and restaurants of course and were comfortable on island without much trouble.  Rocks was making plans for her anesthesia department!  Clearing customs was a bit complex because they were planning an extended stay, however they had a genuine interest in the island, so they cleared customs without incident.

Rocks got her work permit and Luke had a provisional permit as he had yet to find a job.  He was really only concerned about playing in the surf.  He only intended on staying a couple of months, not that she knew that.  He was a little non-committal.  She did know that.  It really wasn’t fair that he came at all, but who would have passed up a trip to the island?  They were good together, however their mutual goals were quite different.  It would play out tragically almost, but that will come out later.  The three made good traveling pals anyway.  If they had any concerns over clearing customs, their fears were unfounded.

Their marina was busy but comfortable and they settled in easily, provisioned the boat and got cleaned up for the yacht club and proceeded to meet Rocks new colleagues.  It was a little disconcerting as they were met by all the surgeons, most of whom have their instructions ready for her, and suggestions for Luke on his potential role in island life.  A couple discussed social issues only, and the evening ended on a light note with Rocks’ friend Tracy behind the bar.  They made their way back to BreakAway in the moonlight convinced they would assimilate into their new group without any trouble.  There were just two of the group they feel could be trouble-Walter and Nici.  Follow the story as it unfolds at Healing Fire Island, by Chery Fee.

Healing Fire Island is about the International Cat ‘Jet’ and RocksAnn the anesthesiologist her owner who sails to Fire Island with her boyfriend Luke. They leave the states for a more laid back life in paradise to pursue fun in the sun and to resurrect an anesthesia department and turn it into a medical tourism destination. Obamacare is looming and patients are seeking alternatives and Rocks is about to turn a profit! She knew the island from earlier sailing vacations, and the clinic from a bunch of frat brothers from med school. It all works out like a dream at first, however there are a couple of issues that she has to deal with, not unlike any other place in the past. The surgeons usually have their preferences, so what is it about Fire Island Clinic that could be sinister that Rocks discovers? What do Luke and Rocks sail into that looks so innocent at first? Get an up close and personal idea of life in the operating room and life as an anesthesiologist living aboard a sailboat in paradise.  Luke is the first mate, and Rocks runs the boat and navigates, Jet runs rat patrol.  They can usually tell when she had been on fish patrol when there has been nose marks on the portholes.  They make their way with the locals without too much trouble, set up there work permits, open bank accounts, and make introductions to all the clinic family.  Everything seems to be in place, and they feel right at home.  Rocks has a few friends from earlier travels, and wastes no time reconnecting.  She gets right down to business at clinic setting up her workstation and supplies as she prefers.  She finds out quickly who thinks they control how things were done at Fire Island Clinic.  Read more, at Healing Fire Island, by Chery Fee.

Imagine you are sitting on the runway, waiting to take off to your holiday destination. As you begin to taxi the pilot announces that there is an engine warning light flashing, but that in his experience this almost always amounts to nothing and both him and co-pilot have made a pragmatic decision to proceed, given that the flight was already running late.
